Fairs of KarnatakaThe land of ancient temples that Karnataka is, it
celebrates a wide array of fairs to pay homage to the local deities of
these temples. Some of the major fairs celebrated in the state include
the following: Sri Vithappa Fair This three days long fair is celebrated in the honor of Vithappa, the local deity of Vithappa village. An important event having a great religious and folk importance, the fair observes a gathering of about 7 to 8 thousand people. The Godachi Fair Organized by the government of Karnataka, this fair takes place at the Godachi village in Ramdurg Taluk of Karnataka. Held in the month of Kartik, this fair comes to honor the local god Sri Veerabhadra who is much revered by the natives of this village. Shri Yellamma Devi Fair Another very important fair is held at Saundatti in Karnataka to pay homage to the presiding deity of the town goddess Yellamma. This fair is held five times between October and February. But the grandest celebration takes place on a full moon day in the form of Margasira. Banashankari Devi Fair An annual fair is held near Badami in the month of January. Lasting for 10 to 12 days, this fair celebrates the bountiful gifts bestowed on the locals by the goddess of forest. This fair is held on a full moon day to celebrate even nature at its best. The rural folk of Badami buy agricultural items, utensils and other domestic needs during the fair.
