Population of Karnataka

With 964 females at per thousand males, the total population of Karnataka is 52,850,562 as per the 2001 census. Recording an increase of 17.25% since 1991, the state has 26,898,918 (50.89%) males and 25,951,644 (49.11%) females.

With 33.98% of urban population, the population density of Karnataka is 275.6 per km². Around 67% population of the state is literate with 76% of males and 57% of females. Primarily a Hindu state, around 83.8% of the population are Hindus, 12.23% are Muslims, 1.91% are Christians, 0.78% are Jains and 0.73% are Buddhist, with the remainder belonging to other religions.

The official language of the state, Kannada is spoken by about 64.75% which is further supplemented by various linguistic minorities like Urdu 9.72%, Telugu 8.34%, Marathi 3.95%, Tamil 3.82%, Tulu 3.38%, Hindi 1.87%, Konkani 1.78% and Malayalam 1.69%.

The birth rate in the state is 2.2% whereas the death rate is 0.72%. An infant mortality rate of 5.5% and a maternal mortality rate of 0.195% supplement the total fertility rate of 2.2%.
