Kovalam Beach

Located 16 km from Trivandrum, Kovalam beach has been a favorite hangout for tourists, especially Europeans, since the 1930s. This internationally renowned beach is supplemented by three adjacent crescent beaches. The southernmost beach, known as the Lighthouse Beach is encircled by low cost lodging houses and restaurants. The southern end of this beach offers a spectacular view of the Vizhinjam mosque.

The Poovar beach located between the southern and northern beaches is the base for local fishermen. North of the Ashok the beach has remained almost unaffected by commercialization. Dotted with elementary wooden fishing vessels, the beach maintains an old-world charm. The Shanmugham Beach, close to the Veli Tourist Village is known for its splendid sunsets.

Between September and March, Kovalam enjoys pleasant weather, and a visit here can be combined with rejuvenating sessions at the ayurvedic massage parlors, yoga centers and water sport facilities that have sprung up for the benefit of international tourists.

Laced with lush green coconut palms, the beach is known for its enchanting belt of golden sands. The seaside offers interesting diversions like the traditional Kathakali dance and ethnic martial art performance, Kalarippayattu.

Swimming in the shallow blue waters at Kovalam is perfectly safe between September and March. Kovalam’s natural bay is ideal for kayaking, swimming, surfing and skiing.
