banks of the river Vaigi. Meenakshi Temple The central attraction of Madurai remains the temple dedicated to the Meenakshi the lovely consort of Lord Shiva. The most important festival is the Chitrai Festival that is held in April/May when the celestial wedding of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar is celebrated. The Potramaraikulam or the golden lotus tank within the precincts of this place where the sangam or the Tamil literary society used to decide the merit of the works presented to them.
